Treating Complex Concerns With Oral Surgery

columbia oral surgery

Did you know that our office provides oral surgery? When you have more complex oral health issues, such as wisdom teeth soon-to-erupt or missing teeth that need replacement, we want to help! In today’s blog, your Columbia, TN, dentist talks about how we treat complex issues with oral surgery.

Planning Your Oral Surgery

To start the process, we will talk to you about your oral health issue, and about the results you want to see. We may also talk to your general dentist or orthodontist too. We then examine the smile with advanced digital x-rays and intraoral cameras. These use 90% less radiation and provide high-definition images on a chairside monitor so we can walk you through the diagnostic process and help you understand the state of your smile. We can then discuss treatment options and how we will conduct them to return your smile to full function, health, and beauty. For many patients, oral surgery can be transformative!

Tooth Extraction

When a tooth cannot be repaired with a crown, or has tooth decay or infection beyond the ability to treat with a root canal, we may recommend extraction to avoid the spread of infection. We could also remove teeth to make room for orthodontic treatment or to pave the way for dentures. If you have wisdom teeth soon to erupt, we could extract them first, that way you avoid the risk of impacted teeth, infection, misalignment, and more.

Our team will plan the process in detail to ensure we avoid contact with nerve tissues, blood vessels, and sinus cavities. We will numb the area with a local anesthesia and can also offer sedation to help you enter a deep state of calm. We then gently remove the tooth with a pair of forceps. For some, this could take as little as a half hour.

Dental Implant Placement

If you have missing teeth, this could lead to issues eating and speaking, and your jawbone could weaken to cause further tooth loss and an aged appearance. But we can help with dental implants. These are small screw-like posts that are made from biocompatible titanium. We insert them into the jaw where they bond with the bone tissue and act as new roots. This stimulates jawbone growth to keep the area from losing mass and density, keeping your smile whole in the process. Our team can place one for an individual missing tooth, or use several to support a bridge or a set of fixed dentures.
