When a tooth is chipped, cracked, or knocked-out, then you need emergency dentistry. Otherwise, major complications could arise! Fortunately, we can offer emergency care for smiles of all ages. In today’s blog, your Columbia, TN, dentist talks about protecting smiles with emergency dentistry.
When You Need an Emergency Visit
When should you contact our team for an appointment? Dental emergencies could include an injury that cracks or chips a tooth, or even knocks one loose or out completely. Sudden unexplained pain in a tooth or an object caught between teeth that floss cannot remove is also a cause for concern. You should also let us know if you have loose or missing restorations, prosthetics or orthodontics.
Call our office right away. If the issue has occurred during our regular business hours, we will try to arrange a same-day visit if possible. If the injury happens outside of our normal business hours, then please call anyway and leave a message. A member of our team will reach out to you with possible appointment times.
Taking Steps to Ease Discomfort
You can take a few simple steps to help ease your initial discomfort and lower the risk of complications before we can see you. For example, you should rinse with warm water and then apply cloth or gauze to any bleeding areas to stem the bleeding. Applying a cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face can help ease swelling too. If a tooth is chipped, try to recover any pieces and bring them with you. If this isn’t possible, don’t worry, we can still restore your tooth. Should a tooth be knocked out completely, then pick it up only by the crown, don’t touch the root, and place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Bring it with you to the office. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever too!
Protecting Your Smile
Our team can provide repair to your damaged tooth. For minor injuries, we could offer same-day improvement with dental bonding. For more substantial cases, we could create and place a custom dental crown. You can also take steps to reduce the risk of future injuries. For example, we can help you with a custom mouthguard, one that provides better protection than a store-bought option.
If you have any questions about emergency dental care, then contact our team today to learn more or to schedule an appointment.
