We have multiple options available, and can help you smile with confidence again! In today’s blog, your Columbia, TN, dentist talks about our dental bridges.
The Causes of Your Missing Teeth
How does a tooth go missing? For some, a tooth could be lost due to a severe case of tooth decay or an untreated infection, which could lead to missing tooth or require extraction to prevent the spread of infection. You could lose teeth to an injury as well. Typically, the most common cause of missing teeth is periodontitis, the advanced stage of gum disease. When you lose teeth. This gap could be a source of embarrassment, but also increase the risk of complications like misalignment, TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), and even issues with eating or speech. But we can help with the placement of a dental bridge!
Creating Your New Bridge
Each prosthetic we provide our patients has been custom-made to ensure a lifelike appearance and of course, a comfortable fit and a balanced bite. We have three options available. The traditional option requires crowns attached to the abutment teeth on each side of the missing tooth, so we will numb these teeth to remove structure and make room for the crow. The cantilever only needs one crown attached to a single abutment tooth. We also have the Maryland, which uses metal or porcelain frames attached to the back of nearby teeth to secure the prosthetic. For an option that lasts much longer, we could insert dental implants into the jaw, which preserves the jawbone and provides structure to attach the crown, keeping the jaw intact so they can last for decades as opposed to just 10 to 15 years.
Once we prepare the teeth and take impressions and images of the area, we will use the information we gather in a lab setting to design and craft the prosthetic from ceramic. The material is very strong and can be shaded to blend with the smile.
Securing Your New Tooth
When your new bridge is ready, we will check the fit and make sure we don’t need to make any final adjustments. The crowns are connected to the nearby abutment teeth with the traditional and cantilever bridges. For the Maryland, we will attach the porcelain or metal framework to the back of the adjacent teeth.
