Summer Smile Care is Not Just For Teeth

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

Summer Smile Care Is Not Just for Teeth

We are a trusted family dentist office in Columbia TN, and naturally one of our top priorities is the dental health and hygiene of our patients. We consider our patients to be like family, and that means we go beyond just the health of each tooth, but into the overall health of your body and the look of your smile. If you think a dental appointment is just about cleaning your teeth and sending you home, we’d like to offer some further thoughts about summer smile care.

Your Lips Speak for your Smile

Lip skin is some of the most delicate skin on the body, and needs special attention and protection from strong sun and drying wind. Buy several tubes of lip balm with SPF, for yourself and your loved ones. They won’t last long in a hot glove compartment, but put them in purses, pockets, backpacks and suitcases so they are always handy. Sunburned or wind-chapped lips are no fun at any age.

Your Gums Frame Your Smile

This is a year-round gum note. Healthy gum are pinkish and firm, and cling tightly to the tooth as it emerges at the gum line. If your gums are paler, puffy, tender or bleed when you floss, this can be an early sign of gum distress. We will speak with you if we notice issues at a dental cleaning, and your should call our trusted staff for an appointment if you notice this between regular appointments.

Consider A Mouthguard

Football is out of season, but many summer activities can expose teeth to the danger of surprise contact with elbows, jawbones or even the ground. If you or a family member like to mountain bike, play pick-up soccer or basketball or zip around on a skateboard, pack a mouthguard in your gym bag or put it with your sports gear. In the event an accident occurs, call us right away for advice or to detemine if an emergency appointment if needed.
