Extracting Your Wisdom Teeth

wisdom tooth columbia

If you have wisdom teeth soon-to-erupt, then you should let us know! We want to help teens and adults avoid wisdom tooth eruption and impaction, which we can do with oral surgery. In today’s blog, your Columbia, TN, dentist talks about extracting wisdom teeth and protecting smiles from serious complications!

The Risks of Your Third Molars

As we approach adulthood, up to four new teeth will arrive. These erupt in the rear of the mouth, and there is rarely any room for them. Which means their arrival could cause a partial eruption known as an impaction, or could lead to damaged teeth and a higher risk of impaction. As your smile is cored, this could lead to alignment issues that alter the appearance of your smile and also increase the risk of serious complications, including tooth decay and gum disease, and even jaw joint strain disorders, like TMD or bruxism (teeth grinding). To avoid these changes to your smile, especially if you have recently completed orthodontic treatment to straighten your smile, we want to remove the teeth before they even erupt!

Planning a Gentle Tooth Extraction

Our team will begin with a dental exam that employs advanced digital imaging technology. Our digital x-rays allow us to peer beneath the gums and identify the exact position of the third molars. Our team can then plan an extraction in detail, ensuring we avoid contact with nerve tissues, blood vessels, and sinus cavities. We also take measurements to ensure the process is a comfortable one for you. For example, we will offer a local anesthesia to numb the area directly. Our team can then discuss sedation options to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation, often with little to no memory of the procedure at all.

Taking Out Your Wisdom Tooth

Once you are sedated and ready, our team will open the gums above these teeth so that we can access and remove them with ease. Our team will then extract them with a pair for forceps and suture the area closed. A friend or family member can take you home, and pick up any prescriptions we provide to ensure a fast and complication-free healing period. We will also have detailed instructions for the next day to two to ensure a clot forms and the area heals quickly.
