“Are Dental Implants Right for Me?”

What are dental implants, and who needs them?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you are no stranger to the variety of problems that their absence can cause. Chewing can be difficult, smiling is not a pleasant feeling, and you may experience pain and discomfort. Dental implants will help you regain your confidence, comfort, and overall oral health. In Columbia, TN, Dr. David Foster of Creekside Dental offers implants to replace one tooth or multiple teeth. Gum disease, poor dental hygiene, bad nutrition, and contact sports are all common reasons for tooth loss. Not replacing missing teeth can cause remaining teeth to weaken and shift, possibly leading to and more tooth loss. Oftentimes, dental implants are the most effective long-term method of replacing missing teeth.

What is the process?

A dental implants replaces a tooth root with a titanium rod, which will be bonded to the jaw. The bonding process will take anywhere from 3 to 6 months.  During this time, jawbone tissue will grow around the rod to hold it firmly in place. Then, a connector called an abutment will be attached to the rod to stabilize your new tooth. Dr. Foster will make a mold of your teeth, create a crown, and secure it to the abutment. If multiple teeth need to be replaced, several abutments can support a bridge, partial, or denture.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Once the implant is in place, it will last for years, and with proper care and maintenance, it can last a lifetime. The color of the crown will be matched to your teeth, so it will look and feel natural. Regular brushing, flossing, and dentist visits are all that are needed to keep your dental implant healthy. There is not a long recovery period involved with implants. If needed, over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, Advil, or ibuprofen can be used. There will be no more close-mouthed smiles or grimacing in pain when you try to eat your favorite foods.  Dental implants will improve the appearance of your smile, raise your self-esteem, and reduce the risk of losing more teeth.
